Rory O'Donnell, brother
of Red Hugh plotted revenge. He and the head of the Maguires
continued to seek help from Spain but to no avail. Eventually
Maguire, regarding the situation as hopeless, chartered
a Breton ship to take himself, O'Donnell and 99 other Gaelic
chieftains and their families to the Continent. Hugh O'Neill
and his family also embarked. In September 1607 they sailed
from Rathmullen, Co. Donegal to the Spanish Netherlands
and thence travelled across Europe to Rome where O'Neill
lived in exile until his death in 1616.
